During the postwar years a new kind of self-skinning spray-on plastic known as 'Cocoon' was developped in the US for the mothballing of naval vessles. In 1959 the company Flos located in Bovezzo, Italy was founded in order to produce, among others, light fixtures utilizing this material. In co-operation with the Castiglioni brothers a series of 'Cocoon' lights were issued by Flos, including the Viscontea hanging light. These 'Cocoon' lights were the first European lighting products to use the new self-skinning plastic.
